The role of networking and coordination is very critical for the CInI towards promoting
itself as an institution working towards livelihood development of tribal communities.
CInI has been able to visit various key government officials and interact with various
civil society organizations. The basic idea is to promote CInI and generate possibilities
of coordination to work jointly towards tribal development.
• Collaboration with Government of Gujarat: One of the achievements
of CInI has been to get linked with the Tribal Development Department (TDD), Government
of Gujarat, as a partner to develop the programme on doubling the income of poorest
Tribal talukas of Gujarat called as “Vanabandhu Kalyan Yojana”. As a partner to
this programme, CInI is providing technical inputs towards planning, implementation
and monitoring of the Vanabandhu Kalyan Yojana. CInI team has developed a detailed
plan on water resource development and management in the Dangs district and this
is implemented through partnership mode between the TDD, CInI and field partners.
The main emphasis is towards developing a detailed systematic implementation strategy
in the field, which would help in achieving the overall objective of doubling the
incomes of tribal communities in Gujarat.
• Collaboration with NABARD: CInI has initiated collaboration with
NABARD under the Tribal Development Fund (TDF). This partnership was initiated in
the state of Madhya Pradesh and is being looked upon as a long term strategic alliance
across the CInI states. Strengthening this relationship would help CInI and NABARD
to work jointly towards improving livelihood of the tribal people across CInI states.
• Collaboration with AVRDC: Vegetable production offers a
double advantage of fetching high income as well as making cash flow available round
the year. But there are certain constraints in the vegetable production and consumption
pattern due to pests and diseases, dwindling soil fertility etc. which all result
in low nutritional content in the diet. To address these problems, AVRDC - The World
Vegetable Center with the funding assistance from Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) is
implementing the project “Improving vegetable production and consumption for sustainable
rural livelihoods” in Jharkhand, India under Central India Initiative since April
2008. This project aims to facilitate the identification and exchange of vegetable
varieties, their evaluation for yield and diseases resistance, selection of superior
vegetable varieties under open field house condition for year-round availability
of vegetables in Jharkhand. The project has played an important role in improving
nutritional status of households, with a balanced nutritional diet, through developing
the home garden modules. Moreover, there will be other interventions for improving
soil as well as human health through promotion of vegetable soybean. The project
will also support the national partners in improving their infrastructure, capacity
building, and access to new information/technologies and ideas. The overall goal
of the project is to enhance livelihoods in rural areas of Jharkhand and ensure
allied source of income along with the main livelihood interventions
• Collaboration with ICRISAT: A comprehensive assessment of water
for food and livelihoods has identified rain-fed areas as the nucleus of poverty,
water scarcity and malnutrition. Increasing agricultural productivity of farming
systems in Central India through participatory research-cum-demonstrations and knowledge
sharing innovations under Central India Initiative (CInI)
• Linkage with MPRLP: A proposal “Reinforcing Livelihood Initiatives
by Developing Diversion Based Irrigation Management” is in the finalization process
to be submitted to SDTT. The project is for two year period in collaboration with
Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Project to be implemented in Dindori District.
CInI would play the role of a resource organisation and take responsibility of resource
mobilization. During the implementation phase CInI would be involved in developing
monitoring framework, conducting/commissioning studies needed during the project,
liaison with other big Public and Private institutions for linking village institutions
with them to sustain the benefits and providing periodic technical support.
The project aims to promote livelihood in tribal areas through integration of livelihood
options forming Diversion Irrigation Management (DIM) as an assured irrigation source
by :-
I. Utilising and developing irrigation potential by diverting water from natural
resources.
II. Enhancing livelihoods by encouraging agriculture diversification and promoting
other livelihood activities.
III. Promoting and establishing community-based institutions to ensure sustainability
of initiatives.
• Tata Steel Centenary Project (TSCP): Conceived as a part of Tata
Steel’s centenary celebrations, TSCP is a Rs. 100-crore mega-initiative that focuses
on enhancing the livelihoods of 40,000 poor tribal households in one block each,
of the tribal districts of Keonjhar (Orissa), Saraikela (Jharkhand) and Bastar (Chhattisgarh),
covering a total of 400 villages through natural resources-based interventions.
As per the MoU between Tata Steel and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, Tata Steel will depute
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Jamshedpur, as its nodal agency for
implementing TSCP and Sir Ratan Tata Trust will appoint the Central India Initiative
(CInI) Cell to provide technical support and overall guidance to the TSCP. The CInI
Cell, set up by Sir Ratan Tata Trust, focuses on dealing with issues relating to
the problems of livelihoods of tribal communities in central India in a comprehensive
manner. Feasibility report and Inception Report for the Tata Steel Centenary Project
have been prepared by CInI.
