KPS Strategy...

Taking the recommendations
of the
research studies in consideration, various field projects were initiated
in Jharkhand to implement the KPS strategy. Presently there are 10 field partners
implementing the strategy towards ensuring stabilization in paddy productivity.
An impact study of the strategy undertaken with one of the partners in 2007-08 clearly
shows the positive outcomes of the interventions. The key focus, while promoting
the KPS strategy was to make the farmers adopt the improved package of practice,
along with providing critical irrigation resources through water harvesting measures.
The present household coverage under KPS is about 1.5 lakh households and it
could be analyzed that the food security issue of the households has improved from 6-8
months to about 10-11 months. This has happened mostly through the improved cultivation
practices through the PoP and providing critical irrigation support.
Systems for Rice
Intensification (SRI), an improved technology, which focuses more on early transplanting
of single saplings and alternate drying-wetting of fields has also been adopted
in most of the areas. SRI forms one of the technology interventions within Kharif
Paddy Stabilization.
The production enhancement through the KPS strategy has been
nearly double in most of the cases and from SRI technology the productivity has
enhanced more than 200%. This increased production has helped in ensuring food security
and encouraging farmers for allied livelihood interventions such as vegetables,
poultry, dairy, lac, etc.
