in Jharkhand

Besides staple crops like rice and wheat, vegetables are part of diet and a source
of income for the rural households.
Vegetables also have great potential to reduce poverty, as they are mostly cultivated
on small family-owned farms where the daily sale of their produce serves as ready
cash income for farmers. Vegetable cultivation in Jharkhand is backward with minimum
land under vegetables, because of various reasons such as unavailability of quality
seeds, low irrigation infrastructure, etc. To address the constraints in vegetable
production, low per capita vegetable availability and pests and diseases problems,
dwindling soil fertility as well as low nutritional availability in the diet of
Jharkhand population, AVRDC-the World Vegetable Center with the funding assistance
of Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) started implementing the project “Improving vegetable

under Central India Initiative (CInI) April 2008.
Through the project, AVRDC with its partners initiated facilitating in identification
and exchange of vegetable varieties, their evaluation for yield and disease resistance,
selection of superior vegetable varieties under open field conditions for year round
availability of vegetables in Jharkhand.
AVRDC and its partners are making strong efforts to improve the nutritional status
of the households with a balanced nutritional diet through implanting the home garden
modules. Moreover, other interventions for improving soil as well as human health
through promotion of vegetable soybean are in their expansion phase.
Field Day at HARP, Plandu, Ranchi
The last two years of implementation of the project activities have been quite successful
in drawing attention and interest of Jharkhand farmers.
An overwhelming response and enthusiasm of the farmers has been observed during
the farmer’s visits to the on-station and on-farm demonstrations, trainings and
field day programs.
The farmers are interested in adopting new varieties and technologies being implemented/evaluated
on-station and on farmers’ fields in Ranchi and Khunti districts of Jharkhand. Key
partners under this project are NBJK, PRADAN, KGVK, IGS and Birsa Agriculture University
(BAU).
